In a severe escalation of violence against the press, two journalists from Chattogram Pratidin, Nobel Hasan and Mamun Abdullah, were shot and critically injured while performing their professional duties on May 21, 2026. The incident occurred in the Bakalia area of Chattogram during a violent clash between local residents and law enforcement.
The two young journalists were conducting a live broadcast covering a massive public protest that erupted following the sexual assault of a four-year-old child. As police fired birdshot, tear gas, and resorted to baton charges to disperse the agitated crowd blockading the streets, both reporters were hit by police gunfire.
Nobel Hasan suffered catastrophic injuries, including a torn finger on his left hand and severe wounds to both legs. Mamun Abdullah sustained a gunshot wound to his waist. Both journalists are currently undergoing emergency medical treatment at the Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
