Legal Notice Issued Over Journalist’s Placement in Condemned Cell

A legal notice has been sent to prison authorities over the placement of journalist Aritra Kundu, an accused awaiting trial, in a condemned cell designated for death-row prisoners at Jhenaidah District Jail.

On November 1, 2026, Advocate Sheikh Asibur Rahman Asif of the Supreme Court sent the notice on behalf of Ahmed Abu Jafar, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Bangladesh Mofossol Sangbadik Forum (BMSF) and President of the Central Command Council of the Journalist Torture Prevention Committee.

The notice was addressed to the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Inspector General of Prisons (IG Prisons) and the Senior Jail Superintendent of Jhenaidah District Jail.

The notice demands that Aritra Kundu be removed from the condemned cell and transferred to a general prison ward within 24 hours, with access to medical treatment. It also warns that a writ petition will be filed before the High Court under Article 102 of the Constitution if the demands are not met.

The matter was disclosed at a press briefing held at 3:30 pm on Sunday in front of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association. Advocate Sheikh Asibur Rahman Asif, Ahmed Abu Jafar, and BMSF Central Committee General Secretary Lion Md. Abul Hossain spoke at the briefing. Journalists and representatives of the organisation from different levels were also present.

Aritra Kundu is currently detained in connection with two cases, numbered 47 and 48, filed at Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station on October 26. The cases were filed under Sections 448, 385, 186 and 506 of the Penal Code.

According to the lawyers, Kundu is an accused awaiting trial and has not been convicted by a court.
