In a troubling use of legal authority, Ashraful Islam, Jhenaidah District Correspondent for Bangla Edition, was arrested by Shailkupa police on April 26, 2026. After being summoned from his home at midnight on April 25 under the pretext of an informal meeting with the Officer-in-Charge, he was detained for 14 hours without charge. Despite having no prior criminal record, Ashraful was sent to court as an unidentified suspect in the murder case of his relative, Mohan Sheikh. Notably, the plaintiff of the case, Harun or Rashid, publicly stated that Ashraful was not involved in the crime and was not named in the First Information Report (FIR).
