Omar Faruk, a staff reporter for the news portal Bangladhara, was forcibly confined and harassed by a high-ranking official at the Chattogram City Corporation. The incident took place on May 7, 2026, inside the office of Chief Revenue Officer S.M. Sarwar Kamal. Faruk had visited the office to seek official information regarding allegations of corruption. Instead of facilitating the request under the Right to Information (RTI) framework, the official allegedly ordered the journalist to be detained and tied up. During the nearly hour long confinement, the official confiscated Faruk’s mobile phone and made a threatening call to the journalist’s father.
