Concerning Trend in Journalist Safety During the Interim Period: Monitoring Report

During the tenure of the Interim Government (8 August 2024 – 16 February 2026), Bangladesh Media Monitor’s “Safety Tracker” documented multiple incidents of violence, threats, detention, legal action, and institutional pressure against journalists. During this period, more than 243 journalists and media workers were affected across a total of 119 separate incidents. These included arrests by law enforcement agencies, filing of cases, interrogations, and seizure of personal devices, raising serious concerns regarding journalists’ professional safety and press freedom.

Observations indicate that physical attacks constituted the most frequent category of incidents, with at least 79 journalists affected in 38 separate attack incidents. Journalists were also subjected to assaults, threats, and obstruction while gathering news, carried out by law enforcement agencies, influential local groups, and politically affiliated individuals. Additionally, the deaths of seven journalists were recorded, including cases of killing, suicide, and suspicious recoveries of bodies. More than 35 journalists faced direct threats in 15 incidents, and at least 10 journalists were dismissed from their jobs. In some cases, media outlets faced operational disruptions, including threats of accreditation cancellation, shutdown of online platforms, and cancellation of registrations of local newspapers.
