Bangladesh Media Monitor Demands Immediate Legal Action and Protection for ‘Dhaka Stream’ Following Extremist Cyber Attack Threats

DHAKA, September 24, 2026 — Law enforcement agencies and the Cyber Crime Unit in Bangladesh must immediately identify and prosecute the extremists who threatened the online news portal ‘Dhaka Stream’ with cyber attacks, and guarantee full security for the outlet’s personnel, online platform, and social media pages, Bangladesh Media Monitor (BDMM) said in a statement.

The organization expressed deep concern over the cyber attack threats directed at ‘Dhaka Stream’ following the publication of an investigative report on September 20. BDMM noted that its official statement regarding the incident was published on its official social media handles in both Bangla and English on Thursday.

According to media reports, on September 21 — the day after the investigative report was published — the news portal’s official email and social media comment sections were flooded with abusive language. Extremists issued a 12-hour ultimatum demanding that the outlet remove the report and issue an apology or face a cyber attack. In response to the threats, the Dhaka Stream authority filed a General Diary (GD) at Kalabagan Police Station in Dhaka and submitted digital evidence to the police.

BDMM emphasized that threatening or launching cyber attacks against any news outlet for conducting objective and public-interest journalism is strictly contrary to independent media and free journalism. The organization strongly urged the Cyber Crime Unit to take swift legal action against the perpetrators and safeguard the journalists and digital infrastructure of the news portal.
