Bangladesh Media Monitor Demands End to Journalist Harassment and Impartial Investigation in Delhi

Bangladesh Media Monitor (BDMM) expresses deep concern and strongly condemns the reported harassment, detention and obstruction of journalists while they were covering the ongoing protests in Delhi, India.

According to media reports, since October 10, at least 15 journalists and online activists have reportedly been detained or taken away by law enforcement personnel while covering the protests. Some individuals were reportedly taken to undisclosed locations. There have also been allegations that journalists were pressured to delete footage documenting police use of force against protesters.

Detaining journalists, taking them to undisclosed locations, intimidating them and pressuring them to delete recorded footage are incompatible with press freedom and the right to gather information independently. Reporting on law enforcement operations and the handling of public demonstrations is a legitimate part of journalists’ professional responsibilities. Obstructing such work undermines the public’s access to information and weakens accountability for the exercise of state power.

Bangladesh Media Monitor calls for an immediate end to the harassment of journalists and interference with their professional duties. We demand that the authorities disclose the whereabouts of detained journalists and ensure the unconditional release. We also call for independent and transparent investigations into all reported incidents, including allegations of coercion to delete journalistic footage, and appropriate legal action against those found responsible.

We urge the Indian authorities to ensure journalists’ safety, protect their ability to report freely and establish accountability for the conduct of law enforcement personnel. No journalist should face detention, violence, intimidation or retaliation for documenting public protests and the actions of the authorities.
