Court Allows Police to Question Jailed Journalist in Jhenaidah

A court in Jhenaidah has allowed police to question journalist Aritra Kundu and another person at the jail gate. They are currently in custody in a case involving alleged extortion, which was reportedly filed after Kundu went to collect information about alleged irregularities in government work.

Lawyer Abdul Mannan said the order was issued on the afternoon of October 29, 2026, by Golam Nabi, a judge of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Jhenaidah.

Meanwhile, another case was filed at a police station on Thursday, accusing Kundu of demanding Tk 10,000 in extortion from Rokonuzzaman, a contractor reportedly close to a senior local BNP leader in Jhenaidah.

According to court sources, police had sought five days of remand. After a hearing, the court allowed police to question the two accused at the jail gate for one day. Sub-Inspector Masum Billah, the investigation officer in the case, had filed the remand application.

The court also directed that the password for Kundu’s seized mobile phone be provided to the police.

The defence lawyer sought the cancellation of the remand application and bail for the accused, but the court rejected both requests.
