On July 16, 2026, the Bangladesh Professional Journalists Forum (BPJF) issued a joint statement demanding the withdrawal of a false lawsuit filed against veteran journalist Mahabub Alam Babu. Babu, Senior Vice-President of the Munshiganj Press Club and Munshiganj bureau chief for Dainik Ajker Durniti, revealed he has been in hiding for 22 days due to a harassment case filed by an illegal money transfer (hundi) trader. BPJF Central President Kazi Shariful Islam (Shakil) and General Secretary Md. Roman Akond condemned the lawsuit as an attack on press freedom and warned of strict protest programs if the charges are not dropped.
