On July 11, 2026, journalists in Gopalganj formed a human chain outside the Gopalganj Press Club to protest a false extortion lawsuit filed against Moniruzzaman Sheikh Jewel, Kotalipara correspondent for Dainik Amar Desh and President of the Kotalipara Journalist Forum. The lawsuit was filed on July 7 by Yasin Hossain, a representative of the contracting firm Jakullah & Brothers Limited, following a July 6 investigative report by Jewel exposing low-quality carpeting and corruption in a BDT 7.46 million road construction project under LGED. Organized by the Gopalganj Journalists Union, media leaders condemned the legal action as a deliberate attempt to suppress investigative reporting, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the case and an independent inquiry by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and LGED into the contractor’s work.
