Journalist Arrested in BDT 1,000 Crore Defamation Lawsuit in Comilla

On July 2, 2026, police arrested Mahbub Alam, General Secretary of Muradnagar Upazila Press Club, over a BDT 1,000 crore defamation case filed by Muradnagar Upazila BNP Joint Convener Kamal Uddin Bhuiyan. The lawsuit stems from a June 2025 report published on “Muradnagar Live TV,” where Alam reported that a rape suspect was affiliated with the BNP, which Bhuiyan claimed maliciously damaged the party’s reputation. Alam was arrested from the Gaidhuli area in Muradnagar and transferred to court on August 6. Muradnagar Police Station OC Mohammad Anwar Hossain Chowdhury stated the arrest was made based on an outstanding warrant, while local journalists condemned the action as politically motivated harassment and demanded Alam’s immediate release.
