Comparative Analysis of Narrative and Framing in Two Different Types of Prothom Alo Content on International Medical College

Munware Alam Nirjhor is the Founder & Principal Director of Bangladesh Media Monitor.

International Medical College is portrayed through two different narratives and framing approaches in two pieces of content published by Prothom Alo. In the video, the institution is primarily presented through a humanitarian, affordable, and service-oriented perspective. In contrast, the newspaper report focuses on issues such as faculty shortages, infrastructural limitations, and compliance with government requirements. Without attributing any specific intention to the publisher, this analysis compares the language, sourcing, selection of information, and presentation style of the two contents to examine possible editorial inconsistency.

This study employs a comparative qualitative content analysis approach. It compares the language, presentation style, information selection, use of sources, and overall framing of two pieces of content published by the same news outlet in order to identify similarities, differences, and variations in narrative construction.

For this analysis, two Prothom Alo contents concerning the same institution were selected. One is an investigative news report published on 11 March 2025, and the other is a video published on 24 June 2026. The analysis is based on a comparative examination of their content, presentation, and narrative framing.

Coding Result

According to the coding results, there are clear differences between the video content and the investigative news report in terms of presentation style, information selection, and framing. The video maintains a positive tone by emphasizing the institution’s healthcare services, humanitarian initiatives, affordable treatment, and infrastructural facilities. In contrast, the investigative report focuses primarily on government inspection findings, faculty shortages, infrastructural deficiencies, compliance with regulations, and observations made by regulatory authorities. While the video relies more heavily on institutional statements and experiences, the news report places greater emphasis on government documents, inspection reports, and expert opinions. These observations suggest that the two pieces of content adopt different narratives and framing strategies regarding the same institution, which may create different overall perceptions among viewers and readers.

The frame analysis shows that the dominant frame of the video content is Humanitarian and Affordable Healthcare. Throughout the video, the hospital is presented as a trusted institution serving the general public. Considerable emphasis is placed on affordable treatment, humanitarian services, qualified doctors and teachers, modern medical facilities, international students, and a quality educational environment. As a result, the overall narrative of the video is primarily centered on presenting a positive image of the institution.

In contrast, the dominant frame of the investigative report is Regulatory Compliance and Institutional Accountability. The report highlights faculty shortages, infrastructural deficiencies, a low number of hospital patients, compliance with government requirements, and issues related to institutional approval. Consequently, its overall narrative focuses less on the institution’s services and more on regulatory oversight, compliance with established standards, and the challenges and concerns surrounding the quality of its educational activities.

Source Diversity

The source analysis shows clear differences in the selection of information sources between the two pieces of content. The video primarily relies on statements from patients, students, doctors, and hospital representatives. In contrast, the investigative report places greater emphasis on information and opinions from the Ministry of Health, BMDC, government inspection reports, relevant officials, and experts. As a result, the different types of sources used in the two contents contribute to differences in their overall narratives.

The language analysis indicates that the video frequently uses positive words and phrases such as “a symbol of trust,” “humanitarian,” “reliable,” “advanced,” “skilled,” and “deserving of appreciation.” These expressions help create a positive emotional appeal toward the institution. In contrast, the investigative report more frequently uses terms such as “deficiency,” “requirement,” “recommendation,” “approval,” “faculty shortage,” and “low patient numbers,” emphasizing institutional accountability and regulatory compliance.

The missing context analysis shows that while the video highlights the hospital’s humanitarian services and positive aspects, it does not mention issues such as faculty shortages, infrastructural limitations, the Ministry of Health’s requirements, BMDC observations, or matters related to institutional approval. On the other hand, while the investigative report focuses on institutional limitations and regulatory issues, it does not include information on affordable healthcare services, free meals for admitted patients, social initiatives, patients’ experiences, or positive opinions from the local community. Therefore, both pieces of content emphasize information that is consistent with their respective framing, while other relevant contextual information remains absent.

Editorial Consistency Assessment

The editorial consistency assessment indicates notable differences between the two pieces of content published about the same institution in terms of narrative, tone, framing, information sources, and overall presentation. As a result, the two contents may create different public perceptions of the institution among viewers and readers. However, it is not possible to draw any definitive conclusions about editorial intent based solely on these two pieces of content. This assessment is limited to a comparative observation of the published materials.

The analysis shows that two different narratives were constructed by the same news outlet regarding the same institution. The video primarily highlights the institution’s services, humanitarian initiatives, and positive image, whereas the investigative report focuses on government inspections, regulatory compliance, faculty shortages, and infrastructural limitations. These observations alone are insufficient to conclude that there is editorial bias or deliberate inconsistency, as the two contents differ in purpose, format, publication period, and journalistic approach. However, from a public interest perspective, audiences could have received a more comprehensive understanding if the content presenting the institution’s positive aspects had also included relevant information about its significant regulatory or institutional limitations.
