On April 27, 2026, Habibul Islam Habib, Senior Reporter for Star News, and video journalist Anwar Hossain were besieged and assaulted in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar. The attack was retaliation for Habib’s investigative report on a major local extortion syndicate. While collecting footage at the Ambar Shah Mosque Market, the team was confronted by 20–25 individuals allegedly acting on the orders of Mosque Committee Secretary Belayet Hossain. The journalists were physically assaulted, their equipment was targeted, and they were forcibly confined in a room for an hour where they faced further torture and death threats.
